A security alert has closed Whipps Cross University Hospital and surrounding roads.

There is a large police presence on site and people are being stopped from entering the Leytonstone hospital.

One woman who contacted the Guardian said the area is "swarming with police."

James Lane, which has an entrance to the hospital, has since 1030am been closed in both directions due to an unspecified 'security alert'.

However, the police have been unable to provide details at this stage and Barts Health, the trust which runs the hospital, said it was not aware of the incident.
