VANDALS have targeted Moreton's village Christmas tree just a week after its lights were switched on.

The tree, on the corner of Gould Close, has now been replaced but villagers have been left wondering who would want to vandalise the tree, and why.

It took volunteers over an hour to put the white lights on the tree in the first place. And now another three hours work has been put in after the tree was pulled down overnight on Sunday.

Moreton, Bobbingworth and The Lavers Parish Council chairman John Collins said: "The locals seem to think it happened after 11pm. I think it's terrible, totally unnecessary."

He added: "The main attraction of tree is at night time when the lights are on. We only started it last year and it was very popular. It's there for Christmas, everyone likes it - it takes a lot of hard work to put up."
