A woman was rescued from the window of a second floor flat by firefighters.
A blaze ripped through through the home in Gardner Close, Wanstead, at at just after 5pm on Saturday.
The woman was treated for smoke inhilation at the scene and the fire was under control by 6.10pm.
Watch manager, Gennaro Tumini, said: “When we arrived, there was thick smoke billowing from the window.
"Thankfully the flat was fitted with a smoke alarm which meant the woman was able to call us in good time and we were able to help her to safety."
Four fire engines and 21 firefighters from Ilford, Leyton and Leytonstone fire stations attended.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
