Parents inspired by a scheme aiming to get families involved in school life have set up a Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

The first ever PTA at George Mitchell Primary School in Farmer Road, Leyton, are planning a series of community events after meeting at Save the Children’s Families and Schools Together programme (FAST) in June.

The award-winning project saw eight families meet at the school every Wednesday evening to cook a meal, play games and socialise.

They are now keen to do more and have established an official PTA.

Charmaine Manning, 37, of Byron Road, who has two children at the school, said: “FAST was absolutely wonderful. When you are picking your child up in the playground you don't get much of a chance to talk to the other parents.

“This was a great chance for us to get to know each other and build a relationship with parents and teachers.

“I was always mindful that our school did not have a PTA. Without parents there is no school. I am very passionate about community and this is our community school.”

Headteacher Saeed Hussain said: “The impact that FAST had on the school has been phenomenal. Not only does it bring parents together but it also has a hugely positive impact on the children.”

Their first project is a summer fete fundraiser, featuring fire engines, face painting and a bouncy castle.

Money raised will go toward buying games for kids to play during breaks.

The school fete will take place at George Mitchell School on Wednesday from 2.30pm.
