An elderly woman has died after being found in a castle moat.
Emergency services were called at about 12.20pm on Saturday following reports of a woman in the moat of Ongar Castle in Castle Street.
A police spokesman confirmed that the woman in her 80s and lived in Ongar.
He added there were no suspicious circumstances.
Essex Fire and Rescue Service said two crews, from Ongar and Waltham Abbey, were called at 12.25pm and brought the woman to the bank of the moat.
At 12.39pm, fire crews reported they had brought the woman to safety and were administering emergency first aid at the scene, but she later died.
