Two mums who have launched a new vintage market to capitalise on the changing community in Leytonstone, as young people move in after being priced out of central London.

The Stones Throw Market will start at the end of the month and organisers are looking for like-minded contributors to get involved.

It will sell designs by local artists mixed with 50s and 60s home ware and vintage clothes.

Despite failing to secure a pop-up shop from Waltham Forest council last year, Lucy Bull and Gail Lockwood decided to establish the market in Leytonsone.

Ms Bull, 41 of Poppleton Road, said she was “disturbed” that so many shoppers were leaving the area to go into central London and large shopping centres.

The pair are aiming to cater for "young arty types” moving into the area who want to sell their work or buy others as gifts.

Ms Bull said: “We've seen a lot of changes in Leytonstone over the few years and since Woolworths closed down there hasn't really been anywhere for people to shop locally for a gift or a treat.

“We have so many betting shops, 99p stores and chicken shops we are practically full.

“This is the main purpose of the market. We want to try and bring shoppers back to the high street and help in the re-generation of Waltham Forest.

"It's for the whole community.”

Designers include Gails Windy Day and print artist Kirsty Harlow, who produced the market logo, as well as bee-keeper Ian Nichols, who will sell locally sourced award winning honey.

Ms Bull, who has raised her children in Leytonstone for the last 15 years, said: “As a child I have always been interested in collecting unique items and to turn this into a mainstream job is just a dream come true.

“We are so passionate about this project and want to sell stuff that is nostalgic, a throwback, to the items your mum had in the 50s and 60s.

“If the reception is good hopefully we will continue for the next year as well.”

The first event is on the Saturday 28th March at St John's Hall from 2pm and will continue on the first Saturday of each month.
