A rugby club is set to travel down memory lane by raising more than £25,000 to upgrade facilities in a 120-mile cycle ride.

Starting on May 21, around 36 members will travel from Eton Manor Rugby Club, in Nutter Lane, Wanstead, to Eton College near Windsor.

The club, whose senior team this year got promoted to the National League 3 South, grew out of social club Eton Manor Boys' Club (EMBC), founded in the early 20th century, moving to Wanstead in 1996.

Dubbed 'More Beers Than Gears', the team will also be stopping at the Olympic Park for a short service where the team pitches were originally sited.

After the Olympic Park the cyclist will head down onto the canal cycle paths to head to Slough and on to Eton where they will give a presentation to Eton students to mark the link between the rugby club and the famous private school.

Proceeds from the ride will go towards upgrading the club’s facilities to support the mini and junior sections as well as for the senior teams.

Eton Manor Chairman Gary Wood said: “We are absolutely delighted to be raising so much money for various infrastructure projects at the club which is a focal point for the local community.

“I am very proud and grateful to all the club members and friends who are taking the time to raise money for such a worthy cause.

“It will be the icing on the cake after gaining promotion to the National League.”

Ride organiser Mike Fennings said the club's investment will benefit Wanstead.

He said: “At Eton Manor we have been creating something very special in the local community and the ride should be a fantastic way of demonstrating our team spirit, sporting ethos and large doses of our sense of humour especially when in lycra.”
