Two police officers serving in Waltham Forest were injured during clashes at an anti-austerity demonstration at the weekend, it has emerged.

The protest outside Downing Street on Saturday came after the Conservatives won a majority in the general election.

Whitehall was shut for several hours as activists mobilised with a number of protestors kettled as violent disorder erupted.

In total, five officers were injured, including two from Waltham Forest who had earlier policed the English Defence League (EDL) march in Walthamstow.

The officers sustained bruising after being struck by objects from the crowd, but were not admitted to hospital and continued to police the event.

Borough Commander Jackie Sebire said: "I am pleased to say that the two officers from Waltham Forest were not seriously injured in the anti-austerity demonstration which took place on Saturday evening.

"I have spoken with them both today and I am extremely proud of the resilience they have shown.

"Both officers carried on despite injuries, to support colleagues and protect the communities of London from the disorder.

"Having policed the EDL demonstration on our own borough, they were further deployed to events in central London where these injuries were sustained.

"Both officers are back out patrolling the borough today, I find this truly inspirational."

A total of 15 people were arrested near Downing Street, with 12 of them held on suspicion of violent disorder and three for allegedly assaulting police.

The youngest of those arrested was a 16-year-old boy.

Police have launched an investigation after vandals spray-painted "F***ing Tory scum" on the Women in World War II Memorial as VE Day celebrations got underway.

Chief Superintendent Gerry Campbell said: "The vast majority of those protesting did so peacefully.

"However a small, violent minority were intent on causing disorder.

"We have launched an investigation into criminal damage to the Women in World War II Memorial.

"This crime is particularly abhorrent considering we are celebrating the 70th Anniversary of VE Day."

Protestors dispersed and the roads re-opened at around 9pm.
