A police warning has been issued over a beggar who has "sworn and jeered" at people while asking for cash and cigarettes.

The Church End Safer Neighbourhood Team said it had received numerous complaints about a beggar in George Lane, South Woodford, over the last two weeks.

Inspector Lee Canter, who leads the team, said: “We have had to deal with an aggressive beggar in and around George lane who is now looking to have further action taken against him if he persists.

“If you are approached by anyone and asked for cash or cigarettes, then please drop the team a line.

“Unfortunately the recent dry sunny spell has brought out those who like to sit on the benches dotted around the ward and drink until they become silly and then just plain rude or menacing.

“I don’t believe many will have an issue with people having a drink while they are out, unfortunately we have an issue when these drinkers cause alarm or distress to our residents.

“We have had people sworn at and jeered as they walk past.

“It’s a shame the few in this case ruin it for the many.”
