Wanstead’s old cinema is set to be remembered in a talk by a history society next week.

Located in the high street, next to The George pub, the 500-seat venue first started showing silent movies while called Wanstead Empire in 1913 to 1929.

It was then renamed Wanstead Kinema with the last screening on October 26, 1956, showing Richard III.

The talk, costing £3 for non-members, will be led by Doreen Golding of the Wanstead Historical Society, who worked in the building from 1968 to 2000 when it was a bingo hall and health club.

It will take place from 8pm on May 21 at Wanstead Library, in Spratt Hall Road.
