The hard work and commitment of Girl Guides from across West Essex has been honoured at an awards ceremony.

A total of 84 Guides, including some from Epping Forest, were presented with Jack Petchey Achievement Awards at an annual ceremony in Hornchurch last Thursday (June 25).

Each of the winners aged between 11 and 25 received medallions, certificates and £200 cheques after being nominated by their peers and leaders for their energy and ambition to succeed.

Among those honoured was Zoe Wright, 14, from the 1st Chigwell Guides.

Zoe was nominated by her fellow Guides for her helpfulness, patience and humbleness at meetings and trips, and for setting a good example for others.

County commissioner Jan Knight said: “These awards evenings are a very special occasion for us to recognise all the outstanding achievements of our young guides.

“The awards have enabled them to have many opportunities that they would not otherwise experience.

“Thanks go to the foundation for their ongoing contribution to Girl Guiding Essex West.”

The Jack Petchey Foundation was established in 1999 to recognise the positive contributions young people make to society and to support them in achieving their potential.

Since then it has invested £90 million to a wide range of 2,000 youth initiatives across London and Essex.
