A scam warning has been issued to churches, schools, surgeries and other properties with car parks after rogue traders targeted premises around Essex.
Cold callers have been asking owners if they need white lines painted in their car parks, allegedly claiming they have been working on nearby roadworks and have surplus paint.
The warning has been publicised by Ongar Town Council after it was issued by the trading standards department at Essex County Council.
The conmen claim to offer good rates and quote vague or misleading figures, before reaching an expensive final cost.
In some cases, the lines have been painted without the owner requesting it, with the conmen then demanding money for the work.
Trading Standards advises anyone who has been approached by the fraudsters should phone Action Fraud on 03001 232 040.
Anyone who feels threatened should phone Essex Police straight away.
