A Walthamstow building has been shortlisted for an award, that many would be keen not to win.
Known as the wooden spoon for architecture the Carbuncle Cup is awarded to the ‘ugliest’ buildings in Britain.
The extension to the Waltham Forest YMCA in Forest Road has made the final six, in the run up to the awards.
Designed by Robert Kilgour Architects, the building will be used to house the new gym and other facilities.
Nominator Mike Duriez said: “Impressively bad, and thus a very good nomination. The relationship with the adjacent historic building is particularly carbuncular.”
Spearheaded by the Building Design magazine, the awards reveal Britain’s ugliest buildings.
Others up for the award include the Walkie Talkie building in London, Woodward Hall in North Acton, the City Gateway in Southampton and the Whittle Building at the University of Cambridge.
The winner will be announced on Wednesday.
