Plans to build a block of flats on a former school tennis court have been approved.

McCarthy and Stone Retirement Lifestyles Ltd applied for permission to erect the 38 flats for the elderly on land at the junction of Alderton Hill and Roding Road in Loughton in June.

The proposed plans are set to see associated communal facilities, 32 off street car parking spaces and access from the building on to Alderton Hill added during the development of the retirement properties.

The former tennis courts were previously used by Roding Valley High School, which is located opposite the plot of land.

Developer Regional Managing Director Ali Maruf said: “It is clear Epping Forest needs more retirement accommodation in order to keep up with its rising elderly population.

"Our new development at Alderton Hill will help address this increasing need whilst providing a high quality development to enhance the local area.

"Plans for the Retirement Living development could generate more than £675,000 a year for the local economy through resident spending."
