A new multi-sports project has been awarded more than £150,000 in a bid to get residents more active.

Sport England gave the cash to Redbridge council for the Fairlop Activation project, starting in January, which will work to help people living in the borough, those with disabilities, and families enjoy a more active lifestyle.

Fairlop Waters Country Park, in Barkingside, will play host to activities including zumba, circuits, running, cycling, rowing, kayaking, sailing, orienteering, golf and walking.

Fairlop Activation is one of over 40 projects to secure a share in £8.2 million of National Lottery funding from Sport England.

Announcing the funding, Sport England director of community sport, Mike Diaper, said: “It’s great to be working with innovative projects like Fairlop Activation which offer more people the chance to get active in a way that suits them best.

“Given the overwhelming benefits of being active, it’s important that age, gender, or income never prevent anyone from taking part.”

Councillor Dev Sharma, cabinet member for civic pride, was excited to hear the news.

He said: “It’s fantastic that Sport England have chosen to fund this incredibly worthwhile project and we look forward to giving residents the chance to take part in some fantastic and diverse activities to stay active.

“We work hard to promote the importance of keeping active and a healthy lifestyle and we look forward to launching this new project in January 2016.”

Free open days, subsidised taster sessions, and pay-as-you go membership-free sessions will be on offer.

More details about the project will be announced later in the year.
