A former mayor, “inspirational” church leader and a town supervisor were all honoured at an awards ceremony last week.

The Epping Town Council awards were given at an event in Epping Hall, St John’s Road, on Friday (April 15).

As well as serving as town mayor in 1980, Denys Favre, 98, has “dedicated decades of his time preserving the town’s heritage” said the council, which made him a freeman of the town.

Mr Favre helped safeguard Hill Hall in Theydon Mount from development before establishing the Copped Hall Trust, and as a founder member of the Epping Society he campaigned against the M25 cutting through part of Epping Forest.

With his late wife Nancy, he also supported the local British Red Cross branch.

MP Eleanor Laing said: “Few people have done more for Epping and the area.

“He has supported so many charities, so many good causes over so many years.

“He is a great gentleman and I send him hearty congratulations.”

Mr Favre, who has recently moved to Leeds, said: “I’m delighted to be recognised by the people of Epping after 52 years living in the town.

“It’s marvellous to have the award and I must thank the town mayor and his council for remembering me after all this time.”

The Townsperson of the Year award went to Canon Rev’d Geoffrey Connor, who came to St John’s Church in July 2000.

Although he plans on retiring later this year, he has been leading plans for a new community centre next to the church.

Town mayor Michael Wright said: “Geoffrey has helped to create a community spirit and a focal point for the people of Epping.

“He has helped to make the church not just a place of worship but a place for brass band concerts, Christmas tree festivals, art exhibitions, horticultural shows and much more.”

He added: “Geoffrey’s warmth and enthusiasm is reflected in his sermons, services and everything he does in the community.

“Canon Geoffrey Connor epitomises the type of person that was envisaged by this award.”

Rev’d Connor said the award was a “great privilege”.

At the ceremony on Friday, town supervisor Bill Towers also received a special award for his 30 years of work for the council.

Cllr. Wright said: “There is nothing Bill cannot turn his hand to.

“He knows pretty much everyone in the town and they know him.

“There are 13 members of staff at Epping Town Council and every one of them turns to Bill for advice.”
