Campaigners are set to stage a meeting to raise concerns over the future of Walthamstow market.

The meeting, organised by Waltham Forest Trades Council, has been called as a reaction to plans to for redevelopment of the St James Street and Walthamstow market areas.

A spokesman for the group said: “Waltham Forest Council is pushing ahead with proposals to re-develop Walthamstow market area all the way to St James Street.

“The plans do away with precious public space, the children’s playground and offer little provision for more local services.

“The huge blocks of flats to be erected will not even be affordable for the thousands on the WF housing waiting list.

“What is this development for? To house people in need? Or just to make tidy profits for the grasping shareholders of property companies?”

Waltham Forest council has recently approved plans for a number of developments in the St James Street area, including one for 473 homes a South Grove, as well as a separate 183-home scheme.

The meeting will take place on Saturday, May 21 at 2pm in Harmony Hall, Truro Road, Walthamstow.
