An MP has said his party leader should “resign now with dignity” after three quarters of his colleagues declared he is no longer up to the job.

Labour MP for Ilford North Wes Streeting called yesterday’s (June 28) vote of no confidence in leader Jeremy Corbyn “unprecedented”, with 171 of his colleagues voting in favour and only 40 against.

He said: “It’s abundantly clear that Jeremy Corbyn cannot command a majority of the Parliamentary Labour Party. His position is untenable.

“He should resign now with dignity.”

Although the result of the no confidence vote is not binding, it is likely a new leadership contest will take place soon when Labour MPs could vote to replace him.

Despite the overwhelming vote against him, Corbyn has said he will not “betray” those who elected him last year by resigning.
