THE SPORTING achievements of the young and old in Waltham Forest got their just rewards at a prize giving in their honour.

Hundreds gathered in Walthamstow Assembly Hall on Thursday (November 17) to celebrate the borough's sporting stars at the Waltham Forest Feel Good Sports Awards.

This year’s Sports Person of the Year was Penelope Wiles, an inspiring character who starting taking part in park runs in 2013 after a battle with cancer and the loss of her husband.

Since then, and at nearly 70 years old, she has completed 144 park runs, holding the course record for her age group, and six half marathons.

Mrs Wiles finished the Manchester Marathon earlier this year in a sub five hour time, qualifying her automatically for next year’s London Marathon.

Joint winners of the Sports Person of the Year Under 16 Award were Suzy Hayes and Eleanor Jennings.

Suzy started playing football when she was five and after playing club football she moved to Arsenal and then on to Millwall.

Through school years 7, 8 and 9 Suzy played as part of the schools boys’ football team and now represents Essex County Girls.

Eleanor is the current National and European Champion in her age group for Tang Soo Do, adding World Champion to her belt after her recent success representing Great Britain.

Winner of the Inclusive Sports Award was Developmental Co-ordination Disorder (DCD) Football Club.

DCD FC provides children with an opportunity to practice and develop their football skills without being judged.

It allows them to develop team skill and play games with their peers, while sessions build confidence, self-esteem and motor skills.

Club of the Year - Orion Harriers Athletics Club

Physical Activity and Health Project Award - Walking Football Leyton Orient Trust

Junior Team of the Year Under 18 - Ridgeway Rovers Under 12 Football Team

Young Sports Leader/Volunteer of the Year Under 16 - Ishaq Muhammed

Outstanding Services to Sport - Shona Gordon

Sports Local Organising Committee (LOC) Special Primary School Award - Henry Maynard Primary School

Sports LOC Special Secondary School Award - Walthamstow School for Girls

Adult Team of the Year - Lee Valley London Skating Club
