THE POPULATION of Redbridge is expected to rise by more than 40,000 in the next nine years.

According to the Annual Public Health Report 2016/17, the number of people in the borough is expected to rise by 43,000 and reach 344,000 by 2026.

There are projected increases among each age group, but the largest relative increase will be in the 65-74 and 85+ populations.

The proportion of the population aged 65 and over is expected to rise from 12 per cent to 14 per cent.

Implications of these changes have been called “significant” in the report. A rise in the number of elderly people with complex needs like dementia and other long-term conditions is also expected.

In 2016, the population of Redbridge was estimated to be 301,000 people.

The report also found that in 2015, migration resulted in more people coming into Redbridge at a rate of 12.4 per 1,000 residents of the population, a higher rate than the country but lower than London.

The rate for England was 5.6 per 1,000 people while London had 15.4 per 1,000 residents.

Four in 10 residents in Redbridge were born outside the UK, which has “not changed significantly” over the last four years, the report found.
