A couple celebrating their 62nd wedding anniversary were guests of honour at a street party to celebrate Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s big day.
Neighbours in Whitehall Gardens, Chingford closed off their street to cars on Saturday and laid out food and drinks for 150 guests.
Community policeman Darren Brand was on hand to judge the best decorated house and a raffle was held to raise cash for Chingford Scouts and charity Haven House in Woodford Green.
The couple, known locally as Hugh and Myra, were joined by neighbours Jenny and Bernard Baker who got into the royal spirit and dressed up as monarchs.
Don Taylor, who helped organise the street party said: “There was face-painting and fancy dress for the children and all the residents moved their cars out of the street and the council gave us permission to close it off. It meant that children could play like they did in the old days.
“One couple dressed up as the Queen and Prince Philip and we had a special cake for a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary who live in the area.
“We had a barbeque, a disco, face-painting, fancy dress and games and it brought everyone together.”
Organisers Stephanie Hopper and Claire Snedker were supported by Chingford Scouts, who offered free use of their hut in Whitehall Gardens for the day.
