Students won prizes at a horticultural show for a garden designed to keep out burglars.
Capel Manor College took part in the RHS Hampton Court Flower show from July 3 to July 8.
The college has worked with the Metropolitan Police for many years and won a silver medal for its Secured by Design (SBD) garden at its centre in Bullsmoor Lane, Enfield.
Created as part of the SBD design initiative, crime prevention measures include a pergola wit rotating bars to prevent climbing and green screens instead of fencing, as well as prickly plants and gravel close to the house.
The plants used in the garden will be relocated to two community groups and a primary school in a deprived area of London.
The college's floristry business, Manor Flowers, exhibited at the show for the first time and won a silver-gilt medal for their floral spider’s web design.
The free standing 3D design includes a combination of white flowers, such as orchids and kalenchoe, with trailing vines, succulents and other foliage. The web is made of small wooden log slices and fresh flowers, and features a handmade spider.
Principal Malcolm Goodwin said: “Creating exhibitions at the prestigious RHS Hampton Court Flower Show is another example of how our students are presented with fantastic opportunities to develop their skills and have fun while studying.
“We encourage students to get involved from the initial idea phase to the creation of exhibitions as this real-world experience is invaluable for preparation to work or higher study.”
