A £2million adult learning centre which will feature classrooms and a library has opened.

The Junction in Cathall Road, Leytonstone, opened this weekend.

The family centre facilities on the same site have also opened.

At the opening, Cllr Clare Coghill Waltham Forest Council leader said: “The council is committed to improving the life chances of our residents from cradle to grave and centres such as The Junction do just that, offering educational and skills-based courses to help their careers as well as support for families.

“I’m also delighted to announce that we will be extending the contract for The Lloyd Park Children’s Charity to run children and family services here for a further two years to make sure our residents get the help they need.”

The children and family centre provides support and activities for babies and young children aged 0-4 years old.

The Junction will also provide art and creative skills classes.

Cllr Coghill added: “The world of work is changing rapidly, with residents facing increasingly complex career choices, and facing greater job insecurity. Given this level of uncertainty we are determined to invest in services that will give a helping hand to residents when it’s needed.”

Courses at The Junction include English, mathematics, employability, business administration and arts and crafts.

Other vocational courses available include hair and beauty, health and social care and apprenticeships.

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan gave the borough a £72,422 grant to equip classrooms as part of his Skills for Londoners programme.

Waltham Forest Council has also provided £72,422 towards the new centre.

The North East London NHS Foundation Trust will also be delivering health clinics at the site and running programmes on healthy eating, dental hygiene and speech and language classes.

The Early Help team will also be located on site to give support to vulnerable families.
