A town council has been recognised for how smartly it keeps its fields.

At the Essex Playing Fields Association in Chelmsford on Thursday evening, Loughton Town Council scooped a number of awards.

Lord Petre, patron of the association, and county council chairman John Jowers handed the town council's recreation committee chairman, Cllr David Wixley, three gongs.

Not only was Traps Hill play area worthy of a silver award, Newmans Lane and Westall Road were given a gold.

However, the council's crowning achievement came when Roding Valley Recreation Ground was judged the best kept playing field in the county.

Enid Walsh, Loughton Town Council's clerk, said: "This award recognises the hard work of the council staff, its contractors and the volunteers who assist with the daily litter pickings.

"We particularly thank the grounds maintenance team at Epping Forest District Council for their endeavours that keep the large Roding Valley Recreation Ground looking tidy all year round."
