An MP has condemned the wave of knife crime violence across the capital and is now calling for more police resources.

Ilford North MP Wes Streeting yesterday called on the Home Secretary Sajid Javid to increases the resources available to the police following a spate of stabbings in the Ilford area.

The most recent incident was on Thursday (February 28) in Gants Hill outside Ilford Railway Station where 20-year-old Che Morrison was stabbed.

Speaking in the House of Commons, Mr Streeting thanked emergency services for their work, but told the Home Secretary that the "legs have been taken out of community policing by police cuts."

He added that: "There are many facets to tackling knife crime, and all of them have one thing in common. And that is that the policies of this government for the last 9 years have made it harder not easier to tackle this crisis."

The MP recently launched a petition to halt police cuts, saying the government should be cutting crime, not police.

The petition has so far gained more than 1,500 signatures.

Mr Streeting said: "As the former Met Commissioner Lord Hogan-Howell warned this week, we desperately need more police officers to tackle the growing pressures of crime - not least knife crime.

"The Prime Minister says there is no link between falling police numbers and rising crime.

"She is deluded.

"We need proper community policing restored in our borough to help tackle the issues of gangs and violent crime.

"I am deeply shocked by the recent stabbings that have occurred in our borough, and angry that Government policies are making tackling the situation harder, not easier.

"I will continue challenging Ministers at every available opportunity until they show the leadership that’s required."
