A baby girl who missed her first birthday because she was undergoing chemotherapy is having a belated birthday party fundraiser.

Emily Piper who was ten and half months old when she was diagnosed with cancer, is now having a belated first birthday party to raise money for the hospitals that helped to save her life.

The toddler, now almost 17 months old, was diagnosed with a Germ Cell Tumour on the base of her spine in August 2018 at Whipps Cross Hospital.

She was then transferred to Great Ormond Hospital where she underwent several procedures followed by six rounds of chemotherapy and surgery.

On February 4, the Piper family, who live in North Chingford, were given the happy news that Emily was clear of cancer.

Her mum, Kelly, 37, said: "As you can imagine after our world ending back in August when we were told of her diagnosis, hearing the news that she was clear of the cancer now was amazing. We are over the moon with her progress.

"Emily sadly missed out on having a party to celebrate her first birthday due to being in hospital having Chemotherapy.

"So now we will be combining a party to celebrate her birthday with a fundraising event for Great Ormond Street Hospital & Acorn Ward at Whipps Cross, both of whom have been beyond amazing during Emily’s treatment.

"Emily received the best treatment/support from both hospitals not just medically but emotionally too. The whole family were supported and we want to ensure that they continue to have that kind of support for children who need to in the future.

"Whipps Cross are under-funded and do not receive the kind of charitable support that GOSH do, we want to provide toys and activities for the Oncology patients who at very short notice can end up spending days and days in hospital."

The birthday party is being held in Chingford in April with invited friends and family being asked to donate to the cause in lieu of a gift for Emily.

All money raised will be donated to Whipps Cross Hospital and Great Ormond Street Hospital.
