A controlling husband put on a boiler suit before murdering his wife with a meat cleaver.

Muhammad Javed, 59, of Staines Road, Ilford, was convicted at the Old Bailey on Thursday, 30 May after a ten-day-trial.

The court heard how on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, he had brutally attacked his wife Saeeda Hussain, 54, with a meat cleaver and then gone to a police station to confess his crime.

The pair had been married for 18 years, but Javed had a controlling personality and other family members told police he could become angry at the slightest thing.

He was paranoid that Saeda was cheating on him, so he had installed CCTV cameras in their house.

Family also told officers that Javed had abused and assaulted Saeeda many times over the years, but none of this was ever reported to police.

In the weeks leading up to the murder he had been getting angrier and angrier with his wife and other family members, and they had begun to fear for their safety.

But after the attack, Javed entered Ilford police station and told officers he had killed his wife.

Javed had also phoned other family members and told them what he had done.

Police arrived at the same time as family members were going into the couple's home, and asked the family to wait outside.

The officers found the door to the downstairs living room had been locked and had to force their way in.

They found Saeeda lying on the floor. She had been brutally assaulted and paramedics pronounced her dead at the scene.

Saeeda had several wounds to her head and arms and beside her body were a hammer and a bloody meat cleaver. Also in the room was a discarded, blood-covered boiler suit that Javed had apparently worn during the attack.

A subsequent post-mortem examination on February 19, 2018 gave the cause of death as multiple injuries. It indicated Saeeda had been subjected to a sustained and brutal attack.

Javed will be sentenced on Tuesday, June 21.

Detective Inspector John Marriott of the Homicide and Major Crime Command said: "The only person who ever thought Saeeda was cheating was Javed, and this was the product of his own warped mind.

“I have no doubt that Javed planned this assault to coincide with a time when he knew his family were away from the home. He probably donned the boiler suit, which we found blood-spattered, to avoid getting his wife’s blood on his clothes.

"Javed was controlling and violent and this escalated in the brutal murder of his wife, Saeeda. If ever a case shows the importance of contacting police if you are in, or aware of, an abusive relationship, then this is it.”
