ESSEX County Council leader Lord Hanningfield has "profound concerns" following the Queen's Speech in which the government announced it was planning to build an extra three million homes by 2020.

Lord Hanningfield said the announcement raises economic, social and environmental concerns.

He said: "No-one opposes the ambition of building more affordable homes for those who have been unable to get a foot on the housing ladder however what is of serious concern are the plans the government has for the creation of flat-pack housing developments, not only going against the wishes of local people but, crucially, being built without the necessary infrastructure to support them."

He added: "Without such infrastructure the pressures that local government is currently facing, in particular in dealing with inward migration and care for the elderly, will simply be exacerbated.

Essex is earmarked to accommodate 6,580 new homes a year under the current East of England Plan.
