A total of 400 people have now died from coronavirus at King George Hospital in Ilford and Queen's Hospital in Romford.

Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, which manages the two hospitals, announced a further two deaths from the virus today.

Neighbouring Barts Health NHS Trust, which manages Whipps Cross in Leytonstone and four other hospitals, confirmed just one but has seen almost 600 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

There have been almost 1,000 fatalities in east London hospitals so far.

According to Public Health England, 170 people died from the virus yesterday.

This figure includes both those in hospitals and those in care homes and the community.

The Government is said to be making plans to reopen schools for some years on June 1, despite opposition from teaching and support staff.

Young children are less at risk of becoming seriously ill from the virus but staff fear they could spread the disease widely, including to teachers.
