Redbridge Council has said it will “try and address problems” with social distancing that arose on the reopening of Wanstead Market.

The Government announced on May 24 that street markets would be allowed to reopen from June 1.

Wanstead Market on Sunday reopened last Sunday (May 7) with stalls spread two to three metres apart, floor markings and two roads temporarily closed.

After asking for feedback from residents on Twitter, the council received a number of complaints about how the first day was handled.

Tim Cuddeford tweeted: “It was impossible to socially distance on the Tesco side of High Street, I suggest pedestrianising the whole of High Street on market day and have stall holders on road.

“Road closures did not help with the major problem of too many people on the pavement.”

Nicola Jarrat said she was “disappointed in the lack of masks worn by stall holders” and would not return “unless the market moves to the green where there is plenty of room”.

A Redbridge Council spokesperson said: “We appreciate that not all visitors to the markets chose to follow social distancing measures, and we are working closely with the markets to try and address problems that arose on Sunday.

“It has been extremely helpful to get feedback from local people on this issue.”
