PEOPLE fed up with overflowing rubbish are calling for recycling bins to be placed in every park.

A petition urging Brighton and Hove City Council to act has so far been gathered nearly 200 names.

It comes after takeaway pizza boxes, fish and chips, and alcohol were among piles of waste dumped across beaches and parks over the hot weekend.

The petition was started by 29-year-old Hove resident Sophie Coleman.

She said: “These green space and public spaces are being used and, by some people, abused.

“It’s upsetting to see the litter such as cans and plastic bottles that isn’t being recycled. In 2020, this seems a little bit basic.”

The Argus:

Her petition states: “Currently there are no recycling bins in Hove Park, Preston Park and several other well used public parks around Brighton and Hove. These parks get really busy, especially during the summer months, and it’s a common sight to see the bins overflowing with rubbish, much of which could be recycled.

“Brighton and Hove City Council should install recycling facilities in these green spaces.

“I regularly run around Hove Park and am fed up with seeing and picking up litter left around the park and around overflowing bins that could be recycled.”

Ms Coleman points to the council’s commitment to green policies after declaring a climate emergency in January 2019.

“Brighton and Hove City Council state on their website ‘If we do not act now on the climate emergency, it will be the next generation who will face the ongoing effects of extreme weather, poverty and pollution’.

“So Brighton and Hove City Council, why are there no recycling bins inside our parks?

“Please sign this petition to the council and share, whether you are a local resident or not.

“Small actions when repeated by many can make a difference.”

So far, the petition has been signed by 190 people, one of whom states “it’s a basic necessity”.

A council spokesman said: “We appreciate how much local people care about recycling and would like to encourage our residents and visitors to Brighton and Hove to think of the environment and recycle where they can.

“To help them do this we have introduced 300 new bins with recycling facilities along the length of the seafront.

“We are keen to extend this to parks and other areas of the city and are working on plans to take this forward.”
