TRAVELLERS in a conservation area have now moved from the site.

Brighton and Hove City Council told travellers they were allowed to use the car park at Waterhall on the edge of the city after being moved from a popular site last week.

However, between 50 and 60 caravans parked on football and rugby pitches at the conservation downland site instead.

The Argus:

The council vowed to take enforcement action against any travellers who were still camped in the area this morning.

Sussex Police have confirmed that all caravans have now moved from the site.

A spokeswoman said: “We have taken action against travellers in Waterhall Road playing field in Brighton

“Officers received a report of a large group of travellers arriving at the location around 4.45pm on Tuesday.

“Police liaised with Brighton and Hove City Council, and due to community concerns, a section 61 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act was served.

“The travellers all left the location by 6pm on Wednesday.”

The Argus:

Travellers were told to move to the area’s car park as a multimillion-pound dedicated site is now full.

Travellers usually have access to the Horsdean transit site in St Michael’s Way, which has 21 pitches.

But access has been restricted due to public health concerns around social distancing.

The council said there are now only three pitches occupied, with no further groups being allowed entry.

Some of the caravans had been camping at Patcham Place with no access to utilities, which are available at the Waterhall site.
