Alarming figures show coronavirus infection rates have soared in almost every London borough.

The rate of infection has risen in 31 of the capital’s 32 boroughs, with only Barking and Dagenham posting fewer new cases this week than the week before.

Figures from Public Health England show Redbridge remains the worst affected London borough.

Between September 25 and October 2 – the latest available accurate data – there were 286 lab-confirmed cases.

The week before there were 228 newly confirmed infections.

The east London borough has the highest rate of infection, at 93.7 cases per 100,000 population, and looks set to be the first in the capital to break the 100 cases per mark.

Only seven boroughs are currently below the 50 cases per 100,00 mark: Camden, Bexley, Bromley, Merton, Sutton, Greenwich, and Kensington and Chelsea.

In Waltham Forest the number of lab-confirmed cases has risen to 173 in a week at a rate of 62.5 per 100,000.

In the seven days prior to September 25, the borough recorded 127 cases, at a rate of 45.9.

Richmond Upon Thames is now the second worst affected borough, having reported 171 new cases at a rate of 86.4 while Hackney and City of London is not far behind, recording an infection rate of 84.6 (246 new cases).
