Smarts Lane was considered the humblest road in Loughton when the picture above was taken c1907.
The lane boasted the first public boys school in Loughton before 1888 and the red bricked building with headmaster's house still stands today (third on left).
Records show that the Carpenters Arms (middle distance) was first opened in 1881 and was popular with visitors to the forest who came by train from the east end of London.
