The Post Office has delivered on its commitment to find a temporary post office to replace a popular branch closing this month,
The post office in George Lane, South Woodford, branch will shut on April 28, despite thousands signing a petition protesting against the decision, made after the building’s owner gave notice to vacate.
After promising in March to continue services in the area, the Post Office will open a temporary office in The Galleria shopping centre from April 15 while it looks for a more permanent site.
Cllr Suzanne Nolan (Con, South Woodford), who campaigned to prevent the loss with Cllr Michael Duffell (Con, South Woodford) and MP Sir Iain Duncan Smith, said they were “really pleased” by the news.
She said: “We have been working hard to try to resolve the issue with the Post Office and, after all of that hard work, we have secured premises.
“It’s good news for residents and will save them having to go to Wanstead a mile and a half away or to Woodford Green.”
She added that “she would imagine” some of the eight staff members employed at the old branch would be transferred over but could not definitely confirm this.
She said: “I know the staff at the Post Office are continuing to work with local shop owners to try to have a franchise in one of the shops. We are really grateful for their hard work.”
