Pictured above is a rural scene at Chingford Hatch level crossing from c1885.
Seen from Larkshall Road, the gates remained until 1971 when a new underpass was built 200 yards up the road at the junction with New Road.
The only surviving level crossing in E4 is at Higham’s Park.
