An East African café was told that improvement is necessary after a recent food hygiene inspection.

The Food Standards Agency reports that Al Jazeera café at High Road, Leyton, was given a rating of two out of five after the inspection on September 24.

Specifically, the cleanliness and condition of facilities and building was ranked ‘improvement necessary’, while both the hygienic food handling and management food safety was found to be ‘generally satisfactory’.

Inspections are to make sure that food hygiene is up to code and holds good food safety standards.

Ratings on a scale are then issued to rank the hygiene standards at the time of inspection.

Five is top of the scale, meaning the hygiene standards are very good and fully comply with the law and zero is at the bottom of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.

It means that of Waltham Forest's 521 restaurants, cafes and canteens with ratings, 242 (46 per cent) have ratings of five and 21 have zero ratings.
