A lifelong supporter of Great Ormond Street Hospital has helped raise £35,000 thanks to a charitable round of golf.
The annual event at Stapleford Abbotts Golf Club, which this year saw nearly 200 guests attend, was organised to help raise money to celebrate the efforts of campaigner Maurice Newman.
Mr Newman, 87, has been supporting Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) for the past 50 years after his youngest sister Olivia was treated for a serious kidney condition there just after the Second World War.
He said he first donated £10 to GOSH when he could back in the day and it is "incredible" to see the charity raise thousands of pounds from a day’s event.
Celebrity names such as former footballer Teddy Sheringham, boxer Michael Watson and ex-darts player Wayne Mardle were also in attendance on September 14.
Stapleford Abbotts’ Club Captain Russell Benjafield, 33, said: “I’ve been playing at the club for the past 11 years and I’ve been involved in the community aspect for the last five years and last year I took on the captaincy.
“The golf club loves doing this type of event. This is the first time I’ve attended this particular one, but it’s been fantastic and for a great cause.
"We have had a great turnout today and the added benefit of having big names such as Teddy Sheringham and Michael Watson here has really added to the occasion.”
GOSH organiser John Fox has said the proceeds will go towards GOSH’s childhood research, specialist equipment, older building refurbishment and family support departments.
Mr Fox added: “The event has been brilliant. We’ve hit a record of £35,000 and we are thankful for all the sponsors, those that have donated in the auction, and those taking part in the golf.
“With Covid and the cost-of-living crisis, the charity’s funding has dropped significantly. This means that these events are even more beneficial.
“Golf is a good sport because it’s inclusive of people from all backgrounds. We pull in people from various businesses and sports. Maurice brings a great network of people that he has known over many years that he has invited.”
