Young people worried about the cost of their prom dress will have the chance to look fabulous without spending a fortune, thanks to a Romford charity’s upcoming prom appeal.

From February 13 to 19, SMILE, which supports vulnerable families across London and Essex, will be running its annual event in Romford Shopping Hall, in which families can choose from a range of dresses donated by generous locals.

In previous years the dresses have only been available to disadvantaged children in Havering, but SMILE has this year opened it up to everyone.

If the child receives pupil premium at school, then they will be entitled to a free dress. If not, they can still attend, though the dresses will be on sale for between £25 and £75.

For those interested, a fitting must be booked in advance, with a one-hour slot costing £25. The booking fee is then reinvested directly into the charity to help cover running costs.

Maria Quaife, SMILE’s chief executive, said: “The prom appeal is personally my favourite appeal we run. It is a chance for young ladies to feel like a princess whilst not having to worry about the extortionate cost of buying a gown.

“Typically, dresses of the standard we provide range from £200 to £800.

"This gown is worn for a few hours then left hung up in the back of the wardrobe for years to come.

"With our initiative, we bring life back to preloved dresses, prevent them from going into landfill and provide a special boutique dress-fitting experience available to all young ladies regardless of their family's financial situation.”

Maria added her thanks to Romford Shopping Hall, and Michelle Fitzgibbons in particular, for supporting the charity ahead of the event.

“Over the past year she has provided multiple spaces for us either free or at a substantial discount. We wouldn't be able to provide such a luxury dress space if it wasn't for her.”
