The hall was opened in 1884 to a design by local architect Edmond Egan, and is one of the most important public buildings in Loughton.

The hall was built in compensation for the loss of lopping trees for firewood by the locals as a result of the Epping Forest Act of 1878.

Today, the hall is still a vibrant community building funded by the City of London Corporation.
