A building society has celebrated 50 years on the high street in Chingford.

Sir Iain Duncan Smith, MP for Chingford and Woodford Green, visited the Nationwide branch in Chingford Mount Road to mark the milestone anniversary.

During his visit, he met the branch team and discussed the importance of face-to-face financial services with branch manager Sarbjeet Kaur.

Nationwide’s research has found that 63 per cent of people value their local branch, with 40 per cent appreciating face-to-face services.

More than a third believe branches are useful for older people and those with vulnerabilities.

Nationwide promised to keep branches open until at least 2026 wherever it currently has one.

Sir Iain also talked to the team about how Nationwide helps customers amid the cost-of-living crisis and supports first-time homebuyers.

He learned about the building society's approach to fighting scams, both in branch and remotely.

Sarbjeet said: "We were honoured to welcome Sir Iain Duncan Smith MP to our branch in Chingford.

"It was a great opportunity for us to showcase how we’re committed to serving the town and communities across Britain.

"After all, Nationwide has been in Chingford for 50 years now."
