A new 960-seat theatre will open in the former Granada cinema in Walthamstow this year.

Now named Soho Theatre Walthamstow, the site will host a variety of performances including comedy, theatre, cabaret, and panto.

It comes after the Grade II listed building was restored by Waltham Forest Council in partnership with Soho Theatre.

Alongside the auditorium, there will be studio spaces, backstage facilities, bars and a restaurant.

The theatre's opening season includes performances from the likes of comedians Dara O'Briain, Rosie Jones and Mark Watson.

To celebrate the opening, the theatre will offer 15,000 tickets for £15 to those who live, work, or study in the borough.

This will be part of a year-long initiative in partnership with Waltham Forest Council.

Chair of Soho Theatre, Dame Heather Rabbatts DBE, said: "It’s been an incredible journey for Soho Theatre.

"We’re no longer a small theatre.

"We’ll be presenting world-class artists to even larger audiences in our new and gloriously refurbished venue in Walthamstow."

The theatre will also host various community engagement activities, including building tours and cross-borough events.

There will also be workshops and initiatives for young people, including the Primary Playwrights programme and the launch of Soho Theatre’s Panto Young Company.

Co-executive directors of Soho Theatre Walthamstow, Mark Godfrey and Sam Hansford, said: "We’re thrilled to be announcing Soho Theatre Walthamstow’s opening and first shows.

"Decades in the making, this iconic building with a remarkable history is reinvented as a fantastic new venue for the future."

The site, which has been a performance venue since 1897, was redeveloped in 1930.

In the 1950s, artists including The Beatles, Buddy Holly, and Dusty Springfield performed at the site.

The last live performance took place in 1973, after which it became a cinema until it closed its doors in 2003.

Since then, the site has been subject to several planning applications.

The site was bought by Waltham Forest Council in 2019.

Council leader Grace Williams said: ‘’This exciting development promises to enrich our community with a diverse array of performances throughout the year.

"Beyond the stage, the team will continue to foster strong connections through community outreach, offering local job opportunities, dedicated spaces and special benefits for our residents and businesses."
