As the nights grow darker and excitement builds for Bonfire Night, Get to Know Animals wants to remind our Epping Forest community about keeping our beloved pets and local wildlife safe during this sparkling season.

Fireworks can be terrifying for animals. Here are our top tips for keeping them calm:

  • Create a safe, quiet space - Set up a comfortable indoor haven with windows and curtains closed to muffle sounds and block flashing lights
  • Sound barriers work - Play music or leave the TV on to mask sudden bangs
  • Bring outdoor pets inside - Rabbits, guinea pigs, and other outdoor animals should come indoors during displays
  • Stay calm yourself - Your pets take emotional cues from you
  • Never punish anxiety - Scolding pets for fearful behaviour will only make them more stressed
  • Try calming aids - Consider calming jackets, pheromone plugins, or anxiety wraps
  • Distraction is key - Provide favourite toys, puzzle feeders, or special treats

Bonfires can be fatal for hedgehogs, mice, and other small creatures seeking shelter from the chilly nights.

Before lighting, check woodpiles carefully, move materials just before lighting, and create alternative wildlife shelters away from fire sites.
