Major road closures and new clearways are set to take place across Epping Forest and Harlow.

Essex County Council has published a series of planned roadworks on a number of routes across the districts of Epping Forest and Harlow, including temporary road closures, amended weight restrictions and the creation of clearways - roads where stopping is forbidden.

The council states the road closures are being introduced for the safety of the public and workers during the work, which are for a range of reasons including repairs, maintenance or for utilities to be installed.

Among the confirmed closures is Epping Lane, Theydon Mount. This road will be closed from a point approximately 455 metres north west of its junction with Mount Road, for about 60 metres in a north westerly direction.

These works are due to commence on February 18, for two days, or as indicated on a valid permit. Affinity Water will be carrying out new connection works at this site. Public safety and that of the workforce are cited as the principal reasons for the closure, with associated signage in place and diversions provided via Epping Lane, Mount Road, Hobbs Cross Road and back to Epping Lane.

Hastingwood Road in Hastingwood is also scheduled for a closure beginning on February 12, again for two days, while Openreach conducts pole replacement works. The affected stretch is from approximately 35 metres north east of the junction with Paris Hall Lane for a distance of 80 metres in a north easterly direction. Diversions will be set up along Hastingwood Road, Greenman Road, Wealdbridge Road, the A414, and back to Hastingwood Road.

Hyde Mead in Nazeing will be closed south east of its junction with St Leonards Road for a distance of about 290 metres for kerb replacement works undertaken by Essex County Council. The closure is scheduled to begin on February 16, lasting five days, or as stated on a valid permit. The alternative route will be signposted and includes Barnfield Acres, Crooked Way, Middle Street and St Leonards Road.

Long Street in Waltham Abbey will also be closed from its junction with Fernhall Lane for approximately 1,010 metres in a south easterly then south westerly direction, starting on February 16, for one day. The work here is again for pole replacement by Openreach, with diversions in place via Long Street and Fernhall Lane.

Separately, Essex County Council has outlined a series of closures and clearway orders on various roads in the Harlow district. Although the works are scheduled to take place at different times within an 18-month period from January 22, exact dates will be specified on one.network. During each phase, affected roads will have strict ‘No Waiting, No Loading and No Stopping’ restrictions on both sides. Areas affected in Harlow include Little Pynchons, Pear Tree Mead, Parnall Road, Paringdon Road, Partridge Road, Tendring Road, and Ployters Road, with alternative routes clearly signposted at each location.

Similarly, a large programme of works is also anticipated in Epping Forest District. This will include the temporary suspension of the 7.5 tonne weight restriction for certain routes such as North Street/Pecks Hill, Waltham Abbey, Sedge Green (Waltham Abbey/Harlow), Hamlet Hill, and Tylers Road (Harlow). Roads affected include High Road (Chigwell Town), Roding Road (Loughton Town), Oakwood Hill Valley Hill, Stonards Hill, Alderton Way, Sun Street/Ladywell Prospect (Sheering), Sheering Mill Lane (Roydon), Epping Road (Roydon), Water Lane, and St Johns Road/Baldwins Hill (Loughton Town). Advanced warning signs and leaflets will keep residents informed of timing and diversions.

These traffic management measures are designed to ensure access for emergency services is not compromised. Diversion routes will be clearly marked and residents notified through site letters, leaflet drops, and clear signage. Any existing parking and waiting restrictions on the affected roads will be suspended only for the relevant closures, with new temporary restrictions taking their place to help works progress smoothly and safely.
