A pedestrian who died after being hit by a van in Leyton has been named as 78-year-old Maria Skrzypek.

Ms Skrzypek, who lived nearby, was struck by a van at the junction of High Road and Millais Road shortly after 9am on April 23.

She died at Royal London Hospital the following day.

An inquest was opened into Ms Skrzypek’s death at East London Coroner’s Court on Tuesday (May 19).

Senior Coroner Graeme Irvine said a full inquest would be necessary, but it could not take place until the outcome of a police investigation and any possible prosecution.

He said that due to “chronic delays” at the Met Police, this could be some time.

“Typically, cases like this are taking at least 18 months for the Metropolitan Police Service to produce a file for the Crown Prosecution Service,” Mr Irvine said.

The driver of the vehicle involved, a silver Vauxhall minivan, stopped at the scene but was not left with any injuries.

No arrests have been made.
