A pensioner is taking on a 700km fundraising challenge to mark his 70th birthday.

Walthamstow resident Richard Bennett has dedicated the walk to The Mill, a well-loved community hub offering inclusive activities, events, and facilities for people of all ages.

He began the walk on April 13 and will complete the journey on May 31, covering nearly one million steps and 100km per week.

Located in the heart of Walthamstow, The Mill is run by and for the community. A small team of staff and volunteers keep its doors open and ensure the space remains welcoming and inclusive.

Mr Bennett said: "Turning 70 felt like the right moment to celebrate the community spirit at The Mill and our belief in ‘People Making Things Happen.’ I’ve seen the impact The Mill makes - giving people of all ages and backgrounds a place to connect."

All donations will help The Mill continue its work and keep its programmes accessible to everyone.

The community has been invited to join in marking the end of Mr Bennett's journey.

He will return to The Mill at 1.30pm on May 31, where he will be greeted by trustees, volunteers, councillors, and supporters. He will receive a handmade rosette and medal in recognition of his achievement, and The Mill’s children’s Lego Club will present him with a custom Lego trophy.

Organisers have described the challenge as more than a personal goal.

A spokesman for The Mill said: "'Making 70 Happen’ is not just a birthday challenge. It is a celebration of collective effort and community spirit.

"By supporting Richard’s 700km journey, supporters are investing in a space that continues to nurture friendships, creativity and belonging across Walthamstow."

The Mill offers a variety of inclusive programmes, from a free kids’ playroom to an honesty library and community events. It serves as a living room for the community, welcoming anyone who wants to connect or get involved.

Mr Bennett’s walk aims to raise vital funds to ensure these services remain available for the long term.
