A hospital chief executive is stepping down to take up a new role in Kent.

Amanjit Jhund will leave Whipps Cross Hospital later this year to become chief executive at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust, which serves more than 500,000 people across multiple sites, including Darent Valley Hospital.

Mr Jhund has led Whipps Cross since July 2023, having joined the hospital in 2022 as deputy chief executive.

Mr Jhund said: "It has been a real honour to lead my local hospital, which means so much to me personally. When I was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, it was the team at Whipps Cross who discovered it.

"I am incredibly grateful for the care I have received here, and for the fact that Whipps Cross saved my life. When I became chief executive, I said that I was unashamedly ambitious for Whipps Cross.

"I am proud that we have lived up to that ambition."

During his time at Whipps Cross, Mr Jhund oversaw improvements to key services including A&E, maternity, and the Eye Treatment Centre.

He also delivered the first phase of the hospital’s redevelopment programme. He led the launch of the Academic Centre for Healthy Ageing (ACHA), in partnership with Queen Mary University of London and Barts Charity.

The centre focuses on improving care for older people through research, education and collaboration.

Shane DeGaris, chief executive of Barts Health Group, said: "Amanjit has made a significant contribution to Whipps Cross and Barts Health more widely, and I want to thank him for his leadership and commitment over the past few years.

"I wish Amanjit every success in his new role and thank him again for everything he has done for our patients, colleagues and communities."

A start date for his new role has yet to be confirmed.
