CONFUSION reigns over mysterious speed signs that residents claim appeared last week but Redbridge Council insists were installed three months ago.

The signs tell motorists the section of Woodford High Road, from Sydney Road to the Epping Forest border, will have it’s speed limit lowered from 40mph to 30mph on May 27.

Retired teacher Jack Levinson, of High Road, Woodford Green, is adamant that the new “backdated” notices only appeared last week, and he thinks drivers may have been illegitimately fined along the road.

He added: “I use that road at least once a day and could not have missed it. I’ve got friends who all say the same thing as they put the 30mph signs up months ago but never said from when it was being enforced.

“I think people may have successfully appealed tickets and so the council are acting now to stop more people appealing.”

Transport for London were not able to provide any figures for speeding fines on Woodford High Road as data is not compiled in such a form.

A Redbridge Council spokeswoman said: “The signs informing motorists that the speed limit was to change on May 27 went up before this date, so we can only assume the gentleman may have missed them.”
