AT LEAST £370 worth of goods have been stolen from Ilford Police Station in the past two years, it has been revealed.
Following a Freedom of Information (FOI) request by the Guardian, it has emerged that a protective vest worth £300, police headphones worth £50 and a high visibility jacket costing £22 have all been pinched from under police noses since January 2006.
Three items of non-police property, a mobile phone, a computer and a piece of “radio/audio equipment”, were also taken.
When contacted by Guardian, Redbridge Police downplayed the figures and said thieving was not a major problem at their Ilford High Road premises.
Detective Inspector Andy Kelly, of Redbridge Police, said: “As far as I’m aware there is no serious security breach in Ilford Police Station.”
Last month it was revealed that over £1 million worth of goods have been stolen from police premises across Britain since 2005.
The full details disclosed by the Guardian’s FOI request are as follows:
January 2006 - Police issue headphones (worth £50)
March 2006 - Police issue high visibility jacket (worth £22.70)
June 2006 - Privately owned computer/word processor (not police property)
