POLICE are investigating after an apparent arson attack in South Woodford last night.

Firefighters rushed to a house on Marlborough Road, which is divided into five flats, at around 10.20pm last night after reports of a blaze.

Four people managed to escape before emergency crews arrived, but a further person had to be rescued.

There were no reported injuries.

Watch Manager at Woodford Fire Station, Darren Horrigan, said: "When our crews arrived they found a fire in a bedroom, but managed to contain it, preventing it from spreading elsewhere.

"The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by our fire investigation team and the police."

He added: "We would also like to use this opportunity to remind residents as ever that fire safety advice is available from all of our stations in London."

Two fire engines, one from Woodford and one from Walthamstow, attended the scene.

Anyone with any information about the blaze is being encouraged to call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
